By 2023, SMASH—Editorial Televisa's comics and pop culture label—was one of the most relevant publishing houses in the Mexican printed entertainment market. It operated as the official publisher of Marvel and DC in Mexico, and had consolidated, since 2018, a manga line with key titles like GUNNM and GTO, complemented by independent comics, books, artbooks and its own convention, SmashCon.
The strength of the catalog contrasted with a digital channel that had fallen behind. The comic industry in Mexico was being driven by an increasingly active, demanding and digital fan community, but SMASH's web ecosystem wasn't up to that community's level nor to the sales volumes the publisher moved through bookstores, comic shops and marketplaces.
Editorial Televisa sought us out to build SMASH's new digital cornerstone: a site that would function simultaneously as an editorial showcase for pop culture in Mexico and as its own online store, capable of capturing demand that had until then been going to third parties.
